Welcome to the workspace on social outsourcing.

Social outsourcing is a new and growing business model. It involves the outsourcing of work from large public and private organsations to social and development enterprises in developing countries. Our particular interest is the social outsourcing of IT goods and services. There are examples of such social outsourcing from formal to social enterprises in urban areas; from urban to rural areas within developing countries; and from Northern businesses to social enterprises in the South ("IT fair trade") as part of their corporate social responsibility agenda.

The objective of our workspace is to build knowledge about IT social outsourcing in order to help deliver socio-economic development. You can contribute by helping us answer questions such as:

  • Where can we find examples of social outsourcing?
  • What development benefits does social outsourcing deliver?
  • What challenges does social outsourcing face . . . and how can we address them?
  • What do client organisations gain by involvement in social outsourcing?

We encourage you to join us.
