OneWorld South Asia and ActionAid International together with the Commonwealth Education Fund and Global Campaign for Education welcome you to the on-line consultation on the Millennium Development Goals of Gender Equality & Universal Primary Education
This e-discussion group builds on the Global Campaign for Education’s consultation on critical issues in basic education over the past year. Participants in that e-discussion had a critical and passionate exchange around issues such as private and public education, HIV/AIDS, the role of teachers, and issues of fundamentalism in education. This new e-discussion being moderated by Akanksha A. Marphatia of ActionAid International will build on the above issues and have a direct input into policy decisions around the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on the global stage.
In order to help countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by 189 governments in 2000, the United Nations has established the Millennium Project. The Project has set up a series for task forces to propose the best strategies for meeting the different MDGs.
The MDG Task Force on Education and Gender Equality has written two draft reports that are likely to be very influential on how the UN reviews progress on these MDGs and frame the way forward. Both reports propose widening the scope of the MDGs and present some challenging proposals, such as shifting the goalposts (eg away from primary schooling).
This e-dialogue presents an opportunity to challenge and strengthen the reports and to mobilise a wider civil society debate on the actions necessary to achieve the gender equality and education MDGs. Please make every effort to participate because only with a strong collective response of voices from around the world will we be able to make a real difference.
Thank you to all those who participated in the first consultation on the gender MDG report. This lively e-discussion was held from June 14th to July 5th. A summary report can be found under the resources page.
We now begin the dialogue on the Universal Primary Education goal & report, from Monday, July 12th to Friday July 30th.
For this first week, we are looking for your reactions to the overall framing of education in this report. The second week will focus around the six key messages outlined in the report. Discussions in the third and final week will centre on the recommendations section.
