Pastoral systems are important to the social and economic development of many societies. They support herders with subsistence and improved incomes by providing large amounts of food and non-food products that play a vital role in ensuring food security thus contributing to the national economies of their countries. Extensive pastoral production occurs on 25 per cent of the world’s arable land, from the drylands of Africa (66 per cent of the total continent land area) to the Arabian Peninsula and to the highlands of Asia and Latin America. This Forum, which attracted the interest of many individuals and organisations of an international community concerned with pastoralists' rights, was closed in spring 2006. Tthe final issues paper arising from this Forum which involved 120 active participants from across the globe, is a unique product, as it arises from the interaction of an interesting mix of pastoralist representatives, practitioners, academics and government officials. You can find the final paper, entitled ‘Mobile livelihoods, patchy resources and shifting rights: approaching pastoral territories’ in the resources section of this Forum. It has been suggested that this distribution group should remain as a means of disseminating information from time to time on the land rights of pastoralists. If you would prefer not to remain in this group, please inform us. Warm regards from the ILC secretariat
