OneWorld South Asia and National Conference of Dalit Organisations (NACDOR) welcome you to an online discussion on the issue of job reservation for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes in the private sector. Beginning today, on November 1, the e-discussion is being initiated in run up to the People's Dignity Rally in New Delhi on December 5, 2004, which is the International Day of Dalit Struggle - the World Dignity Day.

The idea is to discuss themes like:

• Dalits’ status, including employment conditions, comparison with economically backward communities, experience about reservation in government jobs and feedback from other countries on similar issues;
• The need to address Dalit women and youth employment in the context of achieving Millennium Development Goals;
• Related issues like equitable distribution of the benefits of reservation, availability of sufficient numbers of skilled people and the need for education and skill building;
• Reservations on reservation due to the perceived effect on merit and the competitiveness of the Indian industry.

This is a pointer to the kind of issues suggested for the e-discussion. It's not complete or comprehensive by any means. We invite you to express yourself on any of these issues or any other issue that you feel seriously about. We also invite articles, opinion pieces and research reports.

Welcome to the e-discussion.
